Benno Rothschild: Attorney by Day, Comic Art Collector by Night

Benno Rothschild, partner at Hartman Simons & Wood LLP, dedicates his practice to focusing on the development and leasing of outlet shopping centers, but away from work he’s an avid collector of comic art.

Rothschild has been an avid collector of comic art since he was 16 years old, acquring his first piece for his 16th birthday for just $150. “My dad was actually shocked by the price,” he explained. “It was $150. I said, ‘Dad, I’m not asking for a car!’ I just wanted a piece of art.”

“If you had $100,000 in the mid-1980s, you could build a world-class collection of comic art. You could own things that would be like owning the Louvre of comic art,” he says. “Now if you want to do that, you’d have to have $10 million.”

ALM’s Law.com recently visited Rothschild in his office for a tour of his collection, from his oldest piece to his most expensive.
